The Safety Representative and Safety Committee Regulations 1977, made under Section 2(4) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 prescribe the cases in which recognised trade unions may appoint Safety Representatives, specify the functions of such Safety Representatives and set out the obligations of employers towards them.
The Health and Safety at Work Act 1992, as amended, extended the provisions which apply to trade unions to include police staff associations enabling Joint Branch Boards to appoint Safety Representatives in their own right.
